Portrait nominee

I like photographing people I randomly meet on the streets. This man is one. He was very shy but turned out to be a good subject and helped me explore low-key portraits.

My earliest memories of photography come from my father’s trove of photographs taken of the family and of the faraway places and people he saw while in the army. It fueled my curiosity of people and places.

I have always been a creative person, but coming from a practical family it was always channeled into practical uses like making my own holiday cards, clothes, building furniture or remodeling houses. So, art school was not an option. I worked my way through college, entered the business world, managing to take the odd course in art wherever I was. The business world afforded me the opportunity to travel around the world – always taking photographs, some of which were published.

But, the most fascinating photographic subject for me is people – in all their moods and diversity of situations. I enjoy putting people at ease and using my creative talents to show them in their best light whether the image is moody, lighthearted, or serious, colorful or muted. Recently the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers has announced one of my Portraits as a category winner and several as honorary mentions.
