The southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) are one of the most fascinating whale species that migrate each year to the waters around Puerto Pirámides on the Valdés Peninsula in Argentina. These majestic marine mammals belong to the baleen whale family and are particularly known for their slow movements and impressive breaches.
Every year between June and December, southern right whales travel from the cold, nutrient-rich waters of Antarctica to the Valdés Peninsula to mate and give birth to their calves. The protected bays around Puerto Pirámides provide ideal conditions for calving and raising young whales, as they offer shelter from strong currents and predators such as orcas.
