Abstract nominee

My entry to the Fine Art Photo Awards is some photographs from my ongoing project of making, and then finding and photographing microscopic crystals of various substances in polarised light . These elusive subjects are painstakingly discovered out of thousands of microscope slides, and considered in various angles of polarisation and wave plate retardation to tease out the best colour combinations and shapes. Out of tens of thousands of photographs taken, a few shine as photographic subjects, and some of these are my entry to this competition.

The son of two artists, Bevil Templeton-Smith has pursued photography as a creative and artistic outlet against his technical work as an IT consultant and programmer. Striving to find subjects that are difficult to capture, either through complex equipment, or finding the most challenging of setups has led through many photographic forays (macro, astrophotography, ultra wide etc). Now, attaching his camera to a 54 year old microscope, Bevil explores explosions of colour and abstract forms in the photography of crystals in polarised light.
