Around 1.3 billion people worldwide live with a significant disability—a number that continues to grow with rising life expectancy. Caregiving touches the lives of millions, involving 249 million women and 132 million men globally. Women carry the bulk of this responsibility, performing 76.2% of all unpaid caregiving work. These pillars of society often go unrecognized, despite their vital role in sustaining communities.
About fifteen years ago, my mother was diagnosed with a spinal condition that left her unable to walk. I was 17 when I became her caregiver. This journey, filled with challenges and lessons, taught me the importance of resilience-not as invulnerability, but as the ongoing ability to constantly rebuild and move forward. Through my experience, I realized the critical role caregivers play.
This series delves into the emotional and physical realities of caregiving, revealing the fragility and strength that define the experience. Each photograph captures a stage of the journey: impact, responsibility, exhaustion, resilience, unconditional love, and hope. This work seeks to honor caregivers by shifting the way their role is perceived and shedding light on their often-overlooked contributions as the foundation of care in our society.
