For this photo series, I gained access to various homes and used their furniture, objects, and household items to recreate scenes inspired by Chinese myths. Each setup was carefully constructed to exist only for two hours within the frame, after which everything returned to its normal state. Through this process, I explored how objects and environments shape identity.
As a Chinese-born, first-generation immigrant raised in South Africa, my sense of cultural belonging has always felt fragmented. Growing up in transnational environments, I was disconnected from both my birthplace and upbringing. In this work, I examine how children of immigrants, like myself, navigate multiple cultural worlds. By placing myself in these constructed environments, I reconstructed my own identity, highlighting the fluid and shifting nature of cultural belonging.
