This series reflects on gender identity and the role contemporary photographic digital portraiture plays in the representation of the 'female' image. Does it capture or construct sexual identity?
The models are adorned in Victorian era garments that carry with them a conservative and restrictive concept of gender and sexuality. They are poised amidst an ambiguous and expansive sky, in the process of liberation and transformation-ascendant, carried aloft by the clouds. They are unravelling, in an un-grounded escape from gender based impositions of 'authentic' gender. A new representation and possibility for an entirely individual womanhood is asserted, one that seems to be as natural and free-formed as the clouds themselves. Utopia and dystopia symbolically collide to present an alternative vision of the future of gender constructs and limitations.
