A week before the storm, Marshall was a vibrant, creative community along the river. Then, the Appalachian apocalypse hit. Hurricane Helene unleashed 27 feet of water that swept through town, flooding our buildings like fish bowls and washing everything downstream. I wanted to capture this wild chapter of Marshall’s rich history in a tintype time capsule—a medium that mirrors the technology used when the infamous 1916 flood devastated our town. Out of context, these images could be from a war zone, but it’s our Main Street, weeks after the flood. The news cycle moved on quickly. The crowds are gone, but we’re still here. And these are the people I want to photograph.
Wet plate collodion is a fragile, finicky medium, with an endless learning curve and opportunities to fail. But in its imperfections lies its magic. These plates were developed in the street out of the back of my Subaru. As the images slowly emerged in the chemicals, the stories poured out, transforming our darkness into light. My portraits capture the quiet resilience of those who remain: the artists, the musicians, the makers, the dreamers, and the workers. These are the heartbeats of Marshall.
