Engines of Freedom (Series)
DESCRIPTION
A series of photos of my son, taken on a special evening in Texas. I deeply admire how he’s making his dreams come true. As a six-year-old, he was already fascinated by the F-16 and the Corvette. Now, fifteen years later, I get chills as I photograph him in his 1972 Stingray Corvette at Sheppard Air Force Base, where he is training to become a fighter pilot.
AUTHOR
I studied Photography and Advertising at St. Lucas in Ghent, Belgium.
Since 2003, I’ve worked with several international stock agencies, including Getty Images, Imagesource, and Photoalto. I’ve been a self-employed photographer and graphic designer since 2012.
You can view my portfolio here: www.mien.be
For many years, my specialty was children's photography. I developed my own distinctive style, heavily inspired by the 1970s, with an emphasis on carefully crafted, nostalgic settings. I prefer to work with natural daylight, often in self-designed studios like a camper van, a caravan, or a garden house. To enhance the vintage feel, I use clothing from the 60s and 70s, pieces I’ve been collecting since childhood. This creates an environment where children can play and explore freely while I capture their moments. You can see examples of this style at www.mien.be under ‘de klikmobiel’.
After 10 years, it was time for something new.
Lately, I’ve been doing more commercial photography, which varies from studio shoots to interior photography, often with a conceptual approach where I handle the art direction as well.
