DESCRIPTION
Helgi, a local ice climber from Iceland, rising from the depth toward the powerful hallo of the moonrise. His head light against the ice wall contrasts sharply with the otherworldly surroundings, adding a sense of humanity to the stark, raw power of nature.
This image is taken using a long exposure vertical panorama to be able to capture the entire immense scene including the whole moon light circle and the depth of the glacier on 15mm focal.
The deep ice and volcanic veins glimmers under the moonlight, revealing intricate textures and lines of frozen time.
Coordinating safety while managing our equipment in such a harsh environment is no small task.
The conditions are intense—wet, dark, and filled with the loud echoes of shifting ice all around us.
Volcanic sand, trapped in the ancient ice, sneaks into every piece of our gear, complicating our efforts and threatening to damage our equipment.
AUTHOR
Virgil is from a small French town between Lyon and the Swiss border.
In June 2011, with nothing more than a bag on his back, Virgil set out to explore the world and discover his passion for the great outdoors and photography.
Virgil concentrates mainly on Arctic Landscape and Night Photography. He is self-taught and believes in self-guided learning along with mutual knowledge sharing. The photos you find in his gallery are the result of thousands of hours spent outside in snowstorms, strong winds, extreme temperatures, and a tremendous amount of time spent waiting on nature for that precise, extraordinary moment.
