I have long been in love with the vast deserts of New Mexico.
The solitude and desolation of the desert gives me a sense of profound peace. The ever-changing light captures my gaze and my imagination. The wind, dust, rock formations, plants and animals conjure up a sense of magic outside of the beauty we can see. A silent magic of sorts.
In Spanish and Indigenous cultures a Bruja is a woman who practices a religion called Brujería, often referred to as witchcraft. In this story our model took the form of a Bruja during our photoshoot.
We did this series of photographs in Abiquiu, New Mexico. In this area of New Mexico the legend of the Bruja runs deep. The local Mexican, Spanish and Native American folklore all mention women spiritual practitioners within their desert communities.
