Travel nominee

At the end of the Pacific Rim Highway, in the North Pacific rainforest, a magical bus buried under a canopy of spruces and tall red cedars seems to have stepped straight out of a fairytale. A relic of “Into the Wild” tales of freedom, between 1988 and 2020, this old vehicle housed the hopes and dreams of the Pooles Land hippie community.

I was 22, eager for discovery and a life where money wasn't the driving force. Driven by this thirst for adventure, I let myself be carried to this timeless place, an enclave of raw freedom where simplicity reigned.

But then history changed. The global pandemic and the death of Michael Pooles, visionary founder of this utopian space, sealed the camp's fate. The authorities intervened, dispersing the last inhabitants and taking the soul of Pooles Land with them.

I didn't know it yet, but those long winter weeks on that magical bus made me one of the last witnesses to its history.
