Soma Shapes is a series of black-and-grey photographic works derived from close details of Soma Laboratory instruments. Through processes of multiplication, mirroring, and fragmentation, the source material is transformed: functional objects lose their practical identity and reappear as abstract visual structures.
The works explore relationships between sound, form, and perception. Rhythmic repetitions, fractured geometries, and shifting tonal contrasts create compositions that suggest movement and resonance, evoking the behavior of sound waves or vibrating matter. The images occupy a space between order and instability, where structure gradually dissolves into pattern.
The philosophy behind Soma instruments—embracing unpredictability, experimentation, and the creative potential of chaos—forms an essential conceptual foundation for the series. Just as each sonic event produced by these instruments is unique and unrepeatable, the visual language of Soma Shapes reflects processes of emergence, variation, and transformation.
By translating sonic sensibilities into visual form, Soma Shapes proposes a field of perception in which images seem to resonate and visual structures evoke the presence of sound. The series becomes a meditation on rhythm, impermanence, and the subtle traces left by fleeting phenomena.
