Dew Spirits is inspired by melting ice and this special smell in the air when you can feel the presence of spring after a long winter. But it’s more of a memory of experiencing these things (and the longing to see them again). I used to live in a very cold climate, where you won’t encounter an icicle until April or maybe even May. Now I live in California and don’t see any signs of snow even in the dead of winter.
Still, I remember how ice glistens in sunlight, how it melts to water in your hands, and how the air smells faintly of dew and electricity.
This work is about homesickness — not for a place, but for a climate, a rhythm, a way time used to move. It’s about endings that arrive quietly. Maybe it’s winter ending. Maybe it’s something else entirely. The kind of loss you sense before you can name it.
