Panoramic 2nd place winner

SOLAR is an ongoing analog exploration of time and light. Each image centers on a single constant, the sun, while the landscape beneath it changes. The project investigates patterns that surround us daily yet remain imperceptible at human speed. Through long exposure, time is compressed into a single frame, allowing movement normally unseen to register as form.

This photograph condenses one full hour of the sun’s descent over downtown Los Angeles into a single image. The luminous arc traces the sun’s path as evening settles over the city. Below, the Union Pacific rail yard continues its restless activity, trains shifting, lights emerging; while above, the earth’s rotation inscribes a continuous line across the sky.

Captured entirely in-camera on medium-format Kodak Ektachrome color reversal film using a 4x5 field camera with a 6x12 film back. Post-processing was minimal. The work is an analog meditation on the quiet passage of time.

Miguel Rodriguez is a multimedia Visual artist, working primarily with video, photography and animation. The underlying theme of his work is the search for the unseen patterns and constant transformation hidden in plain sight.
