DESCRIPTION
I captured this image in the coastal town of Santa Cesarea Terme in Puglia, Italy - a place where the cliffs rise sharply above the brilliant blue of the Adriatic Sea. What you see here is a fleeting, breathtaking moment: a diver, arced mid-air, suspended in perfect stillness between sky and sea. A young boy watches on, eyes wide with awe. It's a pure, unscripted exchange between action and stillness, courage and curiosity.
I was swimming nearby, soaking up the Mediterranean sun, when the diver caught my attention. I scrambled up the rocks, camera in hand, just in time to catch a burst of motion unfolding above the water. Then, as if choreographed, the boy wandered into the frame. The second I saw him watching, I knew the photograph had transformed - no longer just a dive, but a story.
This image is about more than movement. The boy’s still gaze mirrors the wonder we all feel in the face of fearless expression. The contrast between the quiet observer and the airborne diver reminds us of the magic in everyday moments and how photography can make the ephemeral unforgettable.
AUTHOR
Matt grew up in a half-Italian, half-Australian household in suburban Melbourne, on the other side of the world to Sicily, where his grandparents immigrated from in the 1950s.
Matt's nonno, Giuseppe, and nonna, Vincenza, brought with them the food, the culture, the history, the language and the loudness of Italy.
At the age of 21, Matt's mum finally let him board a Qantas plane on his own to explore 'where he came from'.
Since then, Matt has made numerous trips to Italy, travelling from Turin and Tuscany to Puglia and Palermo and even hiking to the crater of Mount Vesuvius, all with his camera in hand.
Matt wants to bring the magic of the country into homes with the Italian Collection, a series of prints capturing the colour and character of his second-home.
Matt has expanded his photography to include a Pride series and one-off works as part of his Escape to Rottnest Island Collection and Palm Springs Dreaming Collection.
Matt is a TV journalist and presenter who lives in Perth, Western Australia, with his children, Florence and Vance.
