The Darkness Never Ends: Life Under Blackouts in Cuba.
The sun sets over Havana with a beauty both romantic and tragic. Its orange and pink hues paint the crumbling facades of colonial buildings, the Malecón bathed in golden light. But as the light fades, so too does the power.
For them, nightfall no longer signifies rest but a helpless dance with uncertainty.
Electricity in Cuba has become a luxury, rationed and unpredictable. The once reliable hum of old ceiling fans, and the static crackle of radios have been replaced by silence and darkness.
The Uncertainty.
In a land where the sun shines relentlessly, irony drips from the fact that Cubans cannot count on light. As power vanishes entire communities are thrust into paralysis.
Planning is impossible: Will the refrigerator preserve the little food scraped together after hours of waiting in line? Mothers worry whether their children’s homework, painstakingly written by candlelight, will survive the humid night.
When the power returns relief is temporary and laden with anxiety. How long will it last? An hour? Two? No one knows. The constant fluctuations wear down the mind and the spirit, gnawing at resilience until it crumbles like the buildings lining Havana’s streets.
