“Dear Brothers & Sisters” explores the intersection of faith, identity, and belonging within the Latter-day Saint community through the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ members and former members of the Church. Using the familiar language of Church address, the series reclaims a phrase often heard from the pulpit and redirects it toward empathy, dialogue, and visibility.
Each environmental portrait captures an individual within a personal space — intimate, domestic, and quietly revealing. Alongside these portraits are handwritten letters and transcribed quotes drawn from interviews, serving as both confessions and testimonies. The handwritten words, imperfect and human, mirror the vulnerability of faith itself, while the typed quotes echo the lasting imprint of these voices — voices that continue to seek understanding within a faith that once silenced them.
The pairing of image and text creates a visual correspondence — an emotional dialogue between two communities that often struggle to coexist. Through this series, I aim to bridge the gap between tolerance and love, inviting viewers to witness the resilience and spiritual complexity of those who have been asked to reconcile their identity with their devotion.
“Dear Brothers & Sisters” is not a critique, but a conversation — a collective letter of love.
