DarkLight: "The Time Keeper"
Silence and time shape the landscape of this face. I treat light as sculpture: precisely directed studio light carves a minimal space where black carries the narrative, and small reflections in the glasses become tiny windows of time. Without compositing—and with a controlled setup and measured working rhythm—I search for the moment in which tension and calm appear at once.
The visual language is spare and graphic: deep shadows, a restrained palette of cool blues and skin tones, and an emphasis on texture—beard, leather, wool. The pose remains frontal and unyielding, yet breath is palpable. I want the viewer to move closer and wonder about what lies just outside the frame: who is looking back, and how much time sits between us?
This series is less about theatrical action than its aftermath—the moment after the words fall silent, when only light still speaks. The Time Keeper is a portrait of resistance and transience, an attempt to make the slowness of existence legible within layered silence. The series continues to evolve; each session refines the grammar of light and opens space for future chapters.

DESCRIPTION
AUTHOR
Frederik Pieraerd is a Belgian fine-art photographer based in Limburg. In the studio he treats light as sculptural matter: tightly directed setups, minimal staging, and a graphic visual language that makes silence and resolve visible. His portraits balance distance and intimacy; texture—from skin to fabric—becomes a carrier of time.
Pieraerd works primarily in the studio with medium- and full-frame systems. In 2025 his work received international recognition at the International Photography Awards (IPA) with an Official Selection and an Honorable Mention. His ongoing series Dark Light explores how shadow, reflection, and breath shape human presence.
With a hands-on maker’s background, he builds coherent series with a museum-ready finish. In the coming period he is focusing on refining Dark Light, selective competition submissions, and expanding exhibition and publication opportunities—aiming for durable, long-term projects that deepen his controlled, cinematic aesthetic.
