What you’re looking at is the stunning convergence of glacier fed rivers in the delta of southern Iceland, near the Olfusa River. I was fortunate to visit last week during a rare stretch of great weather that made it possible to capture these vibrant colors in full display.
The hues come from minerals and sediments carried down from the glaciers with own chemical signature . They create these surreal, painterly patterns across the shallow delta. After a long winter, the sediments have settled clearly in the foreground, making their presence especially visible.
But these colors are more than just beautiful they tell the story of Iceland’s living geology. The sediments and minerals flowing through these rivers play a vital role in the ecosystem, enriching coastal waters, feeding plankton, and supporting a diverse web of life from the smallest microorganisms to seabirds and marine species.
This is the landscape in motion: dynamic, essential, and breathtaking.
