Fine Art nominee

This series is made by photographing sculptures I made using paper US currency. It is about using money as a proxy for power. The power to silence, hurt, stop, intimidate, and destroy.

Global Big Bad has been consuming everything, in lockstep, for decades. There are a few bright spots, a few victories. But until a lot more people understand the reality and we work together to stop it, there’s no stopping it. Cancer doesn’t take a holiday.

Laura Johansen is an artist working in photography and sculpture, who sometimes combines the two. She holds a BFA from Purchase Collage’s School of Art + Design, and lives and works in New York. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and selected for inclusion in shows by curators from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, MASS MoCA, Houston Center for Photography, CPW, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
