Access
We like to think that where we stand on any topic (politics, sports, whatever) depends on what we see. However, the converse is often true, giving lie to our claims of objectivity.
In the gallery, what viewers of this series see depends on where they stand. They step up or step back and move left or right, trying to figure it out.
The optical performance of this work comes from the triggering of our puzzle-solving brains by the latticework that obscures 1/2 to 2/3 of the subject, from gestalt effects, and from dimensionality. The combination of these visual phenomena creates for me a powerful metaphor for our fraught social situation.
Our media landscape and socio-political scene continue to evolve in parallel with this body of work. As the fences filter reality, the social interactions and sources of knowledge we choose mediate what we know and believe about the world.
This work does not call us to abandon important principles, but rather to stand in a different place – physically, mentally, philosophically – if only for a few moments.
