Fine Art nominee

Edge – North Atlantic Ocean investigates the shoreline as a shifting threshold where land is continuously fractured, transported, and reformed. At this boundary, gravel breaks down into finer matter, minerals circulate back into the sea, and life begins again at microscopic scales. The coast appears temporary, yet it endures beyond human timelines—revealing a form of time that exceeds memory and measurement.

Working with a medium-format camera in the square format, I treat the frame as a human attempt to contain time: a gesture of order applied to an unstable landscape. Each exposure isolates a fragment of coastline, holding a moment that is already in the process of change.

To allow the ocean to physically enter the work, I soak film negatives in seawater collected from the locations where the photographs were made. Salt and minerals remain on the film surface as residues of place. During development, these materials interact with the emulsion and silver halides, producing unpredictable chemical marks—sediments, scars, and constellation-like traces that cannot be fully controlled or repeated.

Through the collision between intention and uncertainty, the photographs move beyond documentation. The sea becomes a collaborator in image-making, transforming the photographic surface into another shoreline—an unstable boundary where landscape,
