My series Broken Psyche is a radical approach to photographic portraiture. It seeks nothing less than transforming the relationship between the photographer, the subject and the viewer.
Psyche is the essence of a person that cannot be seen. It is what lies within the mind and heart, and since the first days of photography, its glimpse has been pursued by portrait photographers. But the faces we present to each other on the street and even in the direct contact of a studio are masks, constructed of appearance, for the sake of appearance. And the more attentive the photographer, the more stubborn the mask, for it cannot really drop to reveal a soul, only another layer of appearance, only an aspect. In my work I am acutely aware of the camera’s limits. In Broken Psyche I’ve sought to transcend those limits and add a dimension to what I see that appearances alone cannot disclose.
The images in Broken Psyche capture not one aspect of the human subject but several. My techniques transform the mask that is the face into something in motion, something that is inherently unstable.
