The series “Mirage” (2022–2024) was initiated during an artist’s residency in the High Coast of Sweden — an area renowned for having, over the course of millennia, gradually risen above sea level.
Following in the steps of a previous camera-based project titled “Veil” (2016-2018), the images seem to hover between vision, memory and dream, reflecting on the impermanent nature of existence. Trees appear phantom-like, similar to shadows or ephemeral cloud formations, ready to dissipate back into space. Boundaries are blurred, hinting at an underlying oneness.
The photographs attempt to capture the sensed impression or atmosphere of a landscape over time and may thus appear reminiscent of pictorialism — the international movement popular in late nineteenth and early twentieth century, cherishing painterly and otherworldly aesthetics.
Ultimately, the works point to the invisible and contentless background in which all things materialize and dissolve, akin to the empty screen onto which a movie is projected or the camera sensor where pictures are temporarily recorded, or the silent field where all sounds arise and then fade away. They evoke the interplay between the world of form and such deeper, ever-present and yet eluding quality or essence — as an encounter between transience and timelessness.
