In the aftermath of industrial development, I study the interplay of human-made forms and transplanted organic figures. Tight, spare compositions, limited color palettes, and plentiful light draw attention to fraught relationships.
I depart from previous topographic analyses by moving living things to the fore, where they become personified. I then consider the interactions between these now-animated beings and their surroundings.
The developers of these properties regarded the organic elements as objects, serving decorative purposes and/or utilitarian functions (environmental remediation, regulatory compliance, community relations, etc.). To the viewer, these personified figures become performers, sentries, prisoners, supplicants, protestors, or henchmen.
Meanwhile, the rectilinear, human-imposed forms – manifestations of an impulse to dominate – loom, contain, and constrain. This dynamic creates a reaction – positive or negative – to the main characters, depending on the roles the viewer has ascribed to them.
Mechanisms of production, illumination, and surveillance are evident. These instruments gesture toward the heroes and villains in various ways, further informing our characterizations.
Since interpretations of the personified figures and their situations vary from image to image, tension persists across the series as we oscillate between alliance
