Buño, (Galicia, Spain), is a small pottery-making village of about 500 inhabitants. It is located in A Costa da Morte, in the northwest of Spain.
In addition to its pottery tradition, Buño is also known for its carnival celebration: La Mikaela.
Its main figure is a large female effigy (a giant doll) that parades through the village streets in a festive “via crucis,” accompanied by hundreds of costumed young people.
In this image, the central role of the Mikaela fades into the background in favor of a couple passionately kissing amid the massive procession that follows her.

DESCRIPTION
AUTHOR
Cristina Becerra Lorenzo (Galicia) is a photographer and audiovisual creator whose practice revolves around the image as a form of thinking.
Her work is rooted in the observation of the everyday, exploring social photography, theatre, and popular celebrations as contexts through which to reveal the unseen layers of reality. She approaches the image as a space of resistance against forgetting, where time fragments and memory takes shape.
Influenced by audiovisual language, her practice moves between documentary and the symbolic, questioning the boundaries between record and interpretation. Through a restrained aesthetic, she creates images that do not seek to explain, but to suggest—opening spaces for interpretation.
She has been awarded the Gold Lux Award 2025 in Social Reportage and a Gold Sony Award 2025 in the Popular Festivities category, consolidating a coherent and distinctive authorial voice.
She is currently developing projects where photography operates as both a way of seeing and of constructing meaning.
