I photographed this scene very early in the morning, on the first or second day of Ramadan alone, in a moment I never planned, but will never forget.
The morning began as something else entirely: an expedition chasing fog across the UAE. A fog alert interrupted our plans in Abu Dhabi, and we drove back toward Dubai hoping to catch it near the Burj Khalifa. The fog never truly arrived. Yet the detour led to something far rarer.
Only during the final weekend of my three-week stay, a colleague invited me to join him with media access. We entered through a quiet side gate before sunrise, while the mosque was still closed to the public. Standing at this exact spot, I felt drawn in by the golden path lights leading toward the entrance, perfectly balanced against the mosque’s soft blue illumination light that shifts with the lunar rhythm of Ramadan.

Born and raised in Berlin, I have always been a lover of big cities. To this day, I am fascinated by the synergy of historical buildings and modern architecture, which dominates the cityscapes of many metropolises. But even though Berlin is amazing, it drives me more and more into the world. A year in Prague during my studies made me a European citizen and re-ignited my passion for travel.
