Blue is the primary color throughout the image because it takes on both the positive quality of calmness and the negative association of anxiety and depression. The mental state of the viewer will therefore alter the meaning of the image in relation to themselves.
For the artist, it represents the isolating haze of mental illness. This perception is an inability to communicate with others due to her own distorted outlook on herself and reflectively the world around her, which is further symbolized by the opposing shadow in the water. Despite the deeply rooted craving to release all of her internal conflict, the veil remains over her eyes until she is prepared for transformation.
