The economic downturn has affected many countries and cities around the world. In the USA the plight suffered by the city of Detroit has been getting steadily worse over an even longer period of time. Once America’s fourth largest city, Detroit can fit Boston, San Francisco and Manhattan all within it’s limits. The population reached nearly two million during the boom time of the fifties. Since then around one million people have left the city.
One major consequence to Detroit’s problems has been the abandonment of many homes, commercial and government buildings, including even some schools, libraries, and churches.
I became so interested in both the social change, and the visual transformation taking place all over the state of Detroit, I felt compelled to experience seeing it for myself and document what I saw.
