Massive growth of cities is one of the global features of our time.
Looking at scale, bulk and distance in urbanization, City+ captures how different regional responses reflect history and culture:
In Qatar & UAE new skylines have shot up in the last few decades. Epic planning has produced Doha and Dubai as readymade arenas for global finance and cultural showcasing. Streamlined urbanisation to immediately put themselves on the map.
Chinese cities are being reconfigured for consumerism, corporate culture and mass migration. New commercial and residential blocks, tower over the communist era low-rises in Chengdu. In Shanghai the traditional pagoda design is transformed into a corporate skyscraper, the Jin Mao Tower, in an already huge city pushing higher.
New York always a leading global city, a patchwork of historical urban styles, innovations and solutions. The new Frank Gehry building in the foreground, formally echoing this collaged, inventive history.

Both thrilling and frightening, massive growth of cities is one of the global features of our time. Working as an architectural photographer since 2000 I’ve been lucky to have travelled extensively abroad and within the UK. In this time have seen the development of many cities and have become engrossed by urbanism - its structures, narratives and transformations.
