In the Domain of the Temporal Being (Series)
DESCRIPTION
My ongoing project is inspired by man’s growing relationship with modern digital technology. In my images, mankind is presented in the form of anonymous male figures that have something organic and primitive about them, but also something artificial and manufactured. This echoes my fascination with the idea of man as a biological being in an increasingly digital world; the emergence of our “digital” selves in an artificially created, constantly changing environment that presents us with unfamiliar domains which we explore, inhabit and in which we develop and grow. Computers, smartphones, the internet, online games and social media are all examples of technologies that have created spaces which do not exist in nature, but in which man spends a great deal of his time. These media have become our window through which we learn about the world around us. They connect us in new and exciting ways and give us access to seemingly unlimited knowledge, but they also have the potential to distort the way we perceive other people, society, and ourselves. This phenomenon has a huge impact on human existence, one in which man moves further and further away from the natural world towards a synthetic reality.
AUTHOR
Biography:
South African born photographer Brett Meredith (Johannesburg, 1973) graduated from the Photo Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in May 2016. His surreal, often paradoxical images are an existential exploration of what it means and feels like to be human. They span space, time and culture, bringing modern and primitive elements together in an apparently incongruent but thought-provoking way. Brett is particularly interested in the dynamics between man, technology and the new digital landscapes that we explore and inhabit; a relationship in which man moves further away from the natural world towards a synthetic reality.
