DESCRIPTION
The protagonists of this essay follow a story that began with a genetic mutation in their ancestors shortly after the first agricultural settlements. A change that allowed them to tolerate lactose even at an adult age, thus perhaps facilitating their survival in these harsh lands. Although the consumption of dairy product is not a matter of survival anymore, breeders and producers, convinced of the goodness of their product and worried about the decrease in consumption and incomes, make sure that their own people (among the most lactose tolerant in the world) aren’t going to lose this characteristic based on an enzyme that stays active only if continuously stimulated.
I was raised in these lands and I descend from farmer families. I have always consumed milk, but unlike my grandparents, I have never had a direct contact with the product, which I usually buy already packed. I wanted to understand the contemporary character of something I take so regularly. I travelled across the country to observe the people who earn their living from milk production, trying to find in them the reflection of that mysterious enzyme they proudly preserve as a characteristic of their culture and nature.

AUTHOR
Born in a small village south of the Swiss Alps. From the first time that I went far from home, my desire to meet new cultures has never diminished. Photography pushed me to move, observe, socialize and get closer to people, helping me to discover other points of view and ways of life.
I m currently based in Ticino (Switzerland), the place of my roots, where I work as a free-lance photographer.
